Your Clinical Scope

As a Consultant Anaesthetist, you’ll provide comprehensive anaesthetic services across elective, urgent and emergency procedures, with perioperative clinic responsibilities shared on a rotating basis.

A diverse case mix to keep you challenged

  • Orthopaedics: hip and knee replacements, trauma surgery and a broad range of general orthopaedic procedures
  • General Surgery: laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bowel resections, hernia repairs, skin lesion excisions and gastroenterology cases
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology: epidural analgesia for labour and anaesthesia for caesarean section
  • Urology: endoscopic and elective procedures
  • Dental Surgery

Expedited Specialist Pathways

Are you an International Medical Graduate (IMG) looking to fast-track your career in Australia?
The Expedited Specialist Pathway provides a streamlined route for eligible doctors to gain recognition and begin practising sooner.

Currently available in General Practice, Anaesthesia, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology (with further specialties expected to be added), this pathway allows eligible Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) to transition into practice with greater ease.

To qualify, you’ll need to hold a specialist qualification listed on the Medical Board of Australia’s Expedited Specialist Pathway accepted qualifications list. Once approved, you can commence work under specialist registration with six months of supervised practice.

About the Role:

Monash Health is seeking an accomplished leader to oversee the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.

The Service Medical Director will:

Provide strategic and clinical leadership, ensuring safe, effective, and reliable service delivery across all Monash Health sites.

Collaborate with key programs and departments including Radiology, Women’s & Newborn, Children’s, Victorian Heart Hospital, Emergency and Intensive Care, and Jessie McPherson Private Hospital.

Deliver expert guidance in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and pain management in partnership with surgical and medical specialists and the broader multidisciplinary team.

Partner with the Surgical Program Leadership Team, Heads of Unit, and other clinical leaders to advance quality, safety, and patient experience.

Maintain strategic oversight of performance, driving excellence in outcomes, service standards, and workforce capability.

Key Result Areas:

Ensure the Department operates efficiently, meeting clinical, operational, and financial targets.

Deliver patient-centred anaesthetic services across planned, emergency, and perioperative settings, including pre-admission, post-anaesthetic, and procedural areas (endoscopy and dental).

Drive continuous improvement, service redesign, and workforce development aligned to Monash Health’s evolving needs.

Provide visible clinical leadership and contribute directly to patient care.

Strengthen research, education, and training within the Department, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
