Advocacy and representation
We advocate on behalf of our members at a wide range of levels including:
- State and Federal Governments
- The Medical Services Advisory Committee
- Private Health Insurers
- Other medical organisations such as the AMA and ANZCA.
We have a dedicated policy team to assist members and their practice staff with economic, professional, and workforce concerns, such as position statements, informed financial consent and billing, submissions, complaint handling and anaesthesia rebates and fees.
Educational
We are committed to providing quality education and training in anaesthesia and related disciplines. Members have access to the following educational resources:
- Interactive anaesthetic modules online which cover professional development, risk management and provide CPD points
- Awards, prizes and research grants that support scientific endeavours and highlight excellence in the field
- International CIG scholarships for trainees every year
- Access to discounts for the American Society of Anesthesiologists SimSTAT series
- Patient information pamphlet for members to assist with patient education.
- The ASA is offering CRASH scholarships to members who are returning to work after a period of leave to undertake the “Critical Care, Resuscitation, Airway Skills: Helping You Return to Work – CRASH Course.”
Events
We run a variety of State and National events throughout the year including:
- Webinars, masterclasses and hands-on workshops
- Annual National Scientific Congress. ASA members receive a discount on their registration.
- State and Territory run Continuing Medical Education meetings (in conjunction with ANZCA)
- Annual conference for practice managers
- Developmental workshops for ASA trainee members
Connecting with fellow anaesthetists
In addition to providing support, representation, and education, we offer a platform for networking and collaboration in a collegial environment:
- Engage with Anaesthesia Special Interest Groups through ACE, in collaboration with ANZCA and NZSA.

Patient pamphlets and useful forms
We offer a range of resources to assist members in their practice available to download or purchase including:
- The Anaesthesia & You brochure to assist anaesthetists with informing their patients of the terms and risks associated with anaesthesia
- Pre-anaesthesia Assessment Forms to use in practice
- Medical Warning Cards to assist with the identification of patients who have experienced an anaesthetic incident
- Patient information pamphlets to assist with patient education

Publications
We provide a variety of publications, including:
- The annual Relative Value Guide, offering comprehensive and accurate advice on billing and assisting in understanding the Medicare and private insurance rebate systems.
- Six issues per year of the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Journal, aimed at professionals in anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, and pain medicine
- The quarterly member magazine, Australian Anaesthetist, offering valuable reports and information on the specialty and the Society’s activities
