How my career is empowered and my future advocated for
My experience with the ASA is one of transformation, from a place of under-appreciation to one of strong advocacy and proud belonging.
I’ll admit I joined the society on a whim, midway through a list as a first-year registrar. The education committee has now coached me in the lead up to two exams, with regular written and viva practice nights, weekend online forums, in-person anatomy workshops, and a compendium of online exam resources, which all became the fundamental structure of my exam preparation.
Most importantly, working as a trainee in Australia means a balance of mastering a craft while navigating and securing your future in an ever-changing work climate. You need only thumb
through the latest issue of Australian Anaesthesia to see the ways that our Society defends and supports our specialty. We’ve been directly represented at the federal level on the issues that will change the way our anaesthesia practice will look tomorrow. Recognition of international specialists, allocation of MBS item numbers to reflect our practice, and the control of practice by private health insurers – these are all issues that would have been processed without the input of working anaesthetists if not for our society.
As I move into the next phase of my career, I look forward to finding my place amongst the common interest groups and continuing education arms inherent to the ASA’s structure. In a climate where anaesthesia is changing faster than ever, I view our society as more than a nice bonus – it’s absolutely essential.”

What it means to be an ASA Trainee Member
I joined the ASA in 2023 as a PMET looking to gain entry into anaesthesia training. In this time, I found the Super Saturday Q&A incredibly helpful, as current registrars/fellows in training provided advice on the application and interview process. As a current trainee, there are various resources the ASA offers which I am finding incredibly useful in the lead up to sitting my exams. There are regular SAQ and VIVA sessions run by consultants over zoom, as well as education videos available through the ASA website to aid with exam preparations. And the best thing is that all of these resources are offered free to junior trainees! I would highly recommend joining the ASA to those looking to gain entry into training and for those preparing for exams.
