New South Wales State Chair
Dr Katherine Jeffrey
Stepping into the role of ASA New South Wales State Chair is both an honour and a significant responsibility. Balancing increased committee commitments, a higher volume of communication, and the demands of leadership alongside a busy clinical career can feel like a formidable challenge—particularly within a healthcare system already under considerable pressure.
This transition also follows the outstanding leadership of Dr Simon Martel, who has guided the NSW Committee for the past four years with clarity, dedication, and deep expertise—especially during a period of major clinical reform. His contribution has left a strong foundation, and sincere thanks are extended for his leadership and service.
Taking on this role is not without its challenges, but it is driven by a clear sense of purpose. Inspiration comes from the colleagues, peers, and community that make up our profession, and from reflecting on what we want to achieve for anaesthetists and the patients we serve. As Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said:
“Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
Bringing experience in both leadership and advocacy, I have been an active member of the ASA NSW Committee since 2020, serving as Education and Welfare Officer and most recently as Deputy Chair. This is complemented by broader involvement across the profession, including roles as the North Western Metropolitan Councillor for NSW AMA, former Chair of the NSW AMA Doctors in Training Committee, and membership of the ANZCA NSW Trainee Committee. Clinically, I continue to work across both public and private settings as a VMO/staff specialist and private practitioner—remaining closely connected to the day-to-day realities of anaesthetic practice.
With a strong foundation and a collaborative approach, this next chapter presents an opportunity to continue advancing the profession and supporting members across New South Wales.
