ASA Trainee Membership is for Ahpra registered medical practitioners in Australia who are preparing to enter, or are currently undertaking, anaesthesia training.

Medical specialist inquiry: submissions extended to 27 November
The deadline for submissions to the parliamentary inquiry into access to and affordability of medical specialists has been extended to Friday, 27 November 2026. The extension gives ASA members an extra five weeks to share your professional experience directly with the Committee. The inquiry is examining specialist workforce distribution, referral pathways, affordability and out-of-pocket costs, the effects of delayed care, and emerging models of service delivery across Australia. The Australian Society of Anaesthetists has made a submission to the House Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability’s Inquiry into access to and affordability of medical specialists in Australia. The submission argues that improving access and affordability requires more than a narrow focus on just specialist fees. Patients’ out-of-pocket costs are shaped by the interaction between workforce and service capacity, referral pathways, Medicare benefits, private health insurer benefits, specialist fees and the information available to patients before treatment. The Australian Society of Anaesthetists understands the concern Australians feel about the cost of specialist care. Patients deserve reasonable fees, clear information before treatment and meaningful action when costs prevent access. We support scrutiny of unjustifiably high charges. However, Sydney Morning Herald’s coverage on 14 September 2026 and Private Healthcare Australia’s call for broader fee restrictions requires a fuller account of what drives patients’ bills. Singling out specialists will not resolve an affordability problem that involves governments, insurers and the wider health system.
