Who can join the Australian Society of Anaesthetists as an Associate Member ?
Medical practitioners registered, or eligible to be registered, to practise in Australia who have a special interest in anaesthesia, for example, a specialist rural generalist.

Membership Fees
Fees include GST unless otherwise stated and apply for the calendar year. If you join partway through the year, a pro-rata rate may be available. You can choose to pay annually or by monthly direct debit.
Part-time fees apply to members working up to 0.2 FTE (one day per week).

Recent ASA advocacy work
The ASA responds to media on specialist fees by asking stakeholders to move beyond finger-pointing and fix the system for patients
The Australian Society of Anaesthetists understands the concern Australians feel about the cost of specialist care. Patients deserve reasonable fees, clear information before treatment and meaningful action when costs prevent access. We support scrutiny of unjustifiably high charges. However, Sydney Morning Herald’s coverage on 14 September 2026 and Private Healthcare Australia’s call for broader fee restrictions requires a fuller account of what drives patients’ bills. Singling out specialists will not resolve an affordability problem that involves governments, insurers and the wider health system. ASA Submission on Private Health Sector Reform Consultation Paper 1
The ASA has provided feedback to the Australian Government’s Private Health Sector Reform Consultation Paper 1, providing feedback on key reforms to the private health sector. The ASA’s submission supports reforms that improve patient access and rigorous review workforce sustainability needs, while emphasising patient safety, evidence-based care, and the maintenance of high specialist standards. Key areas of focus include mental health and maternity services, regional private hospitals, private health insurance reform, and access to safe anaesthesia services. ASA submission on informed financial consent
The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) has made a submission on informed financial consent (IFC) and fee transparency. In its submission to the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s consultation on Fee Transparency in Health Care: Informed Financial Consent and Split Billing Practices, the ASA supported efforts to improve patients’ understanding of healthcare costs before they agree to treatment. The submission cautions however that any reform to IFC must recognise the clinical realities of anaesthesia care.
