The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) congratulates the new 31st Prime Minister of Australia, The Honourable Anthony Albanese, and all those elected to Federal Parliament over the weekend.

We look forward to working with the newly elected government to ensure critical health care issues are addressed and sound policies are implemented.

Anaesthetists, as clinical and organisational leaders, play a pivotal role in medicine. This has been highlighted during our country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our diverse specialty stands ready to collaborate with the newly elected Parliament on many critical health issues that Australians face.

We look forward to a renewed emphasis on supporting public health as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, and advocate for improving access to emergency care through greater Federal Government investment and cooperation with the States.

We hope to see improved support for Anaesthetists delivering short term catch-up “public in private” procedures. For the longer term we support a synergistic balance of private and public systems. The importation of for-profit US-style managed and bundled-care arrangements that interfere in clinical decisions is a path that must be
resisted.

Again, we congratulate you, Prime Minster, and your government, and welcome the diversity of those elected. We look forward to working with you to ensure that all Australians have access to safe, high quality and cost effective anaesthesia for all of their procedures.

Dr Andrew Miller
ASA President
