At the Annual General Meeting on Monday 11 October 2021 Dr Andrew Miller was elected as President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, with a term of two years.

Dr Miller has been an outspoken national advocate for recognition of airborne spread of SARS-COV-2, and the protection of healthcare workers and patients, especially children, throughout the pandemic.

He brings significant medico-political experience to the role, having served as AMA(WA) President, and in his current role on the Federal Council of the AMA where he chairs the AMA Ethics and Medicolegal Committee. He has been awarded the Fellowship of the AMA in recognition of these contributions.

Dr Miller has been Treasurer and Vice President of the ASA and has made important contributions to the Society’s governance and strategic direction during his time on the Board so far.

Dr Miller thanked former ASA President, Melbourne Anaesthetist, Dr Suzi Nou for providing strong leadership to the profession throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Dr Nou, one of the great contemporary leaders of our profession, has championed the need for improved safety protections for Anaesthetists, particularly through the National Covid Evidence Taskforce. Her demonstration that women in medical leadership deliver over and above has been inspirational for many,” Dr Miller said. “In her record-breaking tenure as President she has been an exemplar of what anaesthetists offer to our patients and community and I am pleased she will stay on our Board for a further two years.

“As President of the ASA I will ensure we continue to fearlessly advocate for safety and excellence in patient care without compromise. Anaesthetists have been leaders throughout this crisis due to our training, not only in critical care but risk management. When it comes to patient safety we have been leading for decades and will continue to demand better. When anyone says we have to accept bad outcomes, we say no. Work smarter, work harder, make it safer for healthcare workers and patients alike.”

Dr Miller is an Anaesthetist in private practice in Perth. In addition to his medical qualifications, he has a legal education and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has been a Board member of MDA National for the last six years and has been the President of the Medical Indemnity Insurance Association of Australia.
